Steve Evans Makes Frank Rotherham United Sack Admission

Steve Evans, the Rotherham United boss, has acknowledged his gratitude for the faith shown in him by the club’s hierarchy during a tough early-season period.

Now steering the Millers toward the top half of League One, Evans is eyeing even greater progress.

Faith Restored: Evans on the Brink of a Turnaround

Evans, who returned to manage Rotherham United this summer, faced significant pressure earlier in the season as his side hovered dangerously close to the relegation zone. However, the support of chairman Tony Stewart and vice-chairman Richard Stewart proved crucial.

“I was very, very fortunate at one stage that Tony and Richard stood shoulder to shoulder with me,” Evans admitted. “They weren’t shy in telling me it had to turn.”

The Millers have since turned a corner, going unbeaten in 2025. Sitting just one point off the top half of the table, Rotherham have found their form through a revamped 4-1-3-2 formation. The tactical shift has tightened their defence and revitalised their attack, leading to a streak of impressive results.

Recent Success and Momentum

The turnaround began with a dominant New Year’s Day victory over Lincoln City, followed by a draw at promotion-chasing Huddersfield Town. Rotherham then defeated Bolton Wanderers, advanced in the Vertu Trophy at Chesterfield’s expense, and crushed Charlton Athletic last weekend.

“Since we went to Lincoln and were totally dominant, we haven’t looked back. To beat Bolton and Charlton in consecutive league matches is a really tough thing to do.”

The results have lifted Rotherham within striking distance of the top 10, a far cry from the early season struggles that left the team in the relegation conversation. Evans credits his squad’s belief and the introduction of summer signings, which have started to gel as the season progresses.

Looking Ahead: Top 10 Ambitions

With momentum on their side, Rotherham are setting their sights higher. Evans has been clear about his ambitions for the remainder of the season:

“If we can get into the top 10 and be five or six points off the play-offs as we go into early February, we can give it a go.”

The Millers travel to Burton Albion this weekend in search of a third consecutive league win. A victory would mark their longest winning streak of the season and could see them enter the top half of the table for the first time.

Site Opinion: Evans’ Faith and Tactical Flexibility Pay Off

Steve Evans’ ability to stay grounded during a turbulent start and his willingness to adapt tactically have been instrumental in Rotherham’s revival. The new 4-1-3-2 formation has brought balance to the side, showcasing Evans’ strategic acumen.

The club’s patience with Evans has been rewarded, and the Millers are now poised for a strong second half of the campaign. With a few more wins, they could transform from relegation strugglers into dark horses for a play-off push. Evans’ determination to lead Rotherham back to prominence is evident, and the team’s upward trajectory suggests that brighter days are ahead at AESSEAL New York Stadium.
