Former Rotherham United Boss Favourite For League One Role

Former Wigan Athletic and Rotherham United manager Leam Richardson has become the leading candidate to take over at Wycombe Wanderers, according to bookmakers.

The 45-year-old, currently unattached since his departure from Rotherham in April 2024, is now among the frontrunners to replace Matt Bloomfield, who left the club for Luton Town last week.

Strong Competition for the Role

According to latest odds, Richardson is the joint-favourite for the job at 3/1 alongside Brentford assistant manager Claus Norgaard. Other contenders include former Plymouth Argyle and Stoke City boss Steven Schumacher (4/1), ex-Oxford United manager Des Buckingham (5/1), Solihull Moors boss Andy Whing (8/1), and Dean Holden, who is currently assisting Steven Gerrard at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

Wycombe are expected to announce their new manager by the end of the month. In the meantime, development coach Sam Grace has taken interim charge, guiding the team to a 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town on 18 January.

Richardson’s Managerial Journey

Richardson’s managerial career began at Accrington Stanley, where he held caretaker and permanent roles. He later joined Paul Cook’s backroom staff at Chesterfield, Portsmouth, and Wigan Athletic, achieving multiple promotions along the way.

His most notable achievements came at Wigan, where he took over as caretaker manager following financial turmoil and led the club to safety in League One. He was later appointed permanently, guiding Wigan to promotion as League One champions in 2022 and earning the EFL League One Manager of the Season award.

After leaving Wigan in late 2022, Richardson’s next role at Rotherham United proved challenging. He managed only two wins in 24 games, culminating in the team’s relegation and his subsequent departure in April 2024.

Why Wycombe Might Turn to Richardson

Richardson’s reputation for steadying struggling teams and his success in League One make him an appealing candidate for Wycombe. The club, currently rebuilding after Bloomfield’s departure, could benefit from Richardson’s experience and ability to work under challenging circumstances. His tactical acumen and strong man-management skills were highlighted during his tenure at Wigan, where he played a key role in stabilising the club during a turbulent period.

Writer’s View

Leam Richardson’s potential appointment at Wycombe Wanderers could signal a smart move for both parties. For Richardson, it offers a chance to rebuild his managerial career after a difficult spell at Rotherham. Wycombe’s track record of success in League One, combined with his resilience during adversity, makes him a strong candidate to lead the club forward. While his recent record raises some questions, Richardson’s previous successes suggest he has the tools to bring stability and direction to Adams Park.
