Sheffield United have re-signed Ben Brereton Diaz on loan from Southampton until the end of the season.
The 25-year-old Chilean international, who previously had a successful spell at Bramall Lane, is expected to play a key role in the Blades’ promotion push.
Familiar Ground
Brereton Diaz watched Sheffield United’s 2-0 victory over Norwich City from the director’s box and is expected to be eligible for Tuesday’s clash against Swansea City. Having impressed during his first stint at Bramall Lane last season, where he scored six goals in 14 Premier League appearances, the forward is keen to replicate that form.
The familiarity of Sheffield United, coupled with his positive experience under manager Chris Wilder, influenced his decision to leave Southampton temporarily. Brereton Diaz joined Southampton from Villareal for £7 million last summer but has struggled to make an impact, with his last Premier League appearance coming in December against Liverpool.

Wilder’s Enthusiasm
Blades boss Chris Wilder expressed his delight at securing the return of Brereton Diaz, saying:
“This is a great fit for everyone and Ben will be an important player for us in the second half of the season. In a tough campaign, he was great for us last season, and we would have loved to have kept him, but the Southampton move was too good to turn down.”
Wilder highlighted the forward’s personality, mentality, and experience as crucial factors in the decision to bring him back. He believes Brereton Diaz’s familiarity with the club will ensure a seamless reintegration into the squad.
Player’s Perspective
Brereton Diaz shared his excitement about returning to Sheffield United: “I’m absolutely buzzing. It is a club I’ve been at before and really enjoyed, and I obviously know the staff and the players that are still here.”
He added that his young family’s location in Southampton made Sheffield United an appealing choice, offering both familiarity and an opportunity to contribute to the club’s promotion aspirations. “Coming back to Sheffield United this time I know I will enjoy it more than the first time,” he said. “The lads have done unbelievably well, and I’m just here to hopefully help the team achieve the goal of promotion.”
Writer’s View
Ben Brereton Diaz’s return to Sheffield United is a shrewd move for both player and club. For Sheffield United, it brings back a proven performer familiar with the club’s ethos and system. His ability to deliver in key moments, as seen during his first spell, could provide the Blades with the firepower needed to secure promotion. The forward’s willingness to return to Bramall Lane demonstrates his belief in the club’s ambitions, and his arrival will undoubtedly boost morale among fans and players alike.
