Sheffield United are on the verge of completing three significant signings, manager Chris Wilder has confirmed, as the club looks to strengthen its squad for the latter half of the Championship season.
The Blades, currently top of the league after their victory over Norwich City, are aiming to secure promotion to the Premier League and are targeting up to five new arrivals during the January transfer window.
Blades Target Key Additions
Among the potential new recruits is Southampton striker Ben Brereton Diaz, who was spotted at Bramall Lane during the Norwich match, and Leicester City forward Tom Cannon, for whom an accepted bid has been reported. Wilder, keen to bolster the squad, has outlined his ambitions to ensure United remain competitive in the tight promotion race.
Speaking about the ongoing transfer activity, Wilder said:
“We’re close. We’re close on one that’s been floating about today [Brereton Diaz] and another couple. We’re after five new players and I expect to sign them all. We’re close on three, we’re talking to number-one targets, and from a financial and personality point of view, they all want to come and be part of a hopefully successful last 19 games of the season.”
The manager also highlighted the competition among the Championship’s top teams, noting the depth and ambition of rivals such as Leeds United and Sunderland, who have already made high-profile moves this month. Sunderland’s acquisition of Enzo Le Fee from Roma and Leeds’ robust squad underline the challenges Sheffield United face in maintaining their position.
United’s transfer plans also extend beyond the attacking options, with Wilder expected to focus on midfield and defensive reinforcements following season-ending injuries to Harry Souttar and Oliver Arblaster. These setbacks have intensified the urgency to add depth across the pitch.

Writer’s View
Sheffield United’s proactive approach in the January transfer window reflects the club’s determination to capitalise on their strong position in the Championship. With key signings like Brereton Diaz and Cannon potentially joining, Wilder appears to be crafting a squad capable of both sustaining their promotion push and competing at the next level. However, as rivals strengthen, the Blades will need every addition to hit the ground running to ensure their efforts translate into results on the pitch.
