Carlisle United Set To Recall 28-Year-Old

Carlisle United striker Luke Armstrong could return to the squad for this weekend’s match against Fleetwood Town, despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future.

Head coach Mike Williamson confirmed that Armstrong, who was left out of last week’s 1-0 defeat to Bradford City, is under consideration for selection.

Armstrong’s Absence and Potential Return

The 28-year-old forward was omitted from the Bradford match by “mutual agreement” due to concerns over the risk of injury potentially jeopardising a transfer. However, with no deal currently finalised, Williamson indicated that Armstrong remains a key option for the squad.

“He’s in exactly the same boat – if called upon he’s more than committed,” Williamson told the News & Star. “But when conversations are being had and there’s a possibility of moving, we want to look after the player. He’s been fantastic for us.”

Transfer Speculation

Armstrong, who has been linked with moves to Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Fleetwood, and Barrow, remains at the centre of “ongoing conversations.” Williamson acknowledged that while there are “offers,” they are not yet formal bids. Any move, he stressed, would have to benefit both the player and Carlisle United.

“There are a few different options,” Williamson said. “But again, it has to work for the football club as well as the player.”

Armstrong’s Impact at Carlisle

Since joining Carlisle United from Harrogate Town in January 2024, Armstrong has made 45 appearances, scoring six goals. Despite modest goal returns, his commitment and work rate have been highly valued by the club, making him a significant player in the squad.

Meanwhile, Jack Robinson is also considering his future, with Williamson confirming the defender has multiple “options” for a potential move away. Carlisle could face a critical period in the final days of the transfer window as they navigate potential outgoings and reinforcements.

Writer’s View

Luke Armstrong’s situation underscores the delicate balance Carlisle United must strike between respecting a player’s career aspirations and prioritising the club’s needs. His possible return to the squad highlights his professionalism, but clarity on his future is crucial. With interest from several clubs, a resolution may arrive sooner rather than later. For Carlisle, ensuring any transfer benefits the team remains paramount in their quest to climb the League One table.
