Sheffield United‘s Chris Wilder has stated that should Kyle Walker wish to return to the club, the door would be open to do so.
Walker’s long-serving stint at Manchester City looks to have come to an end after a very difficult season for the England international, and Pep Guardiola has since confirmed that he had asked to leave the club.
Wilder Suggests Walker Comeback
Wilder emerged through the club’s academy system but was bought by Tottenham Hotspur before he could fully emerge as a talent in South Yorkshire. He was sent back on loan to Bramall Lane in his first year in London, and was also sent to Queens Park Rangers before becoming a Premier League staple.
With Walker seemingly on his way out of Manchester, Wilder discussed the opportunity to bring the 34-year-old back to his boyhood club. He said to the Sheffield Star:
“When he was talking about finishing his career at Sheffield United he never mentioned that maybe he might have a visit to the Middle East or to somewhere in Italy before!”
We’ll still be there when he fancies that opportunity. It’s great to have incredibly talented individuals, who have achieved everything in the game, that still have a love for Sheffield United.”
Walker is currently linked to AC Milan, but a move is believed to not be close to completion.
Writer’s View
It would certainly be a wonderful story to see Walker return to Sheffield United but this move is certainly a year or two away from being a real opportunity. City will want to cash in on their club captain and moves to Italy and Saudi Arabia have been touted. For now, Sheffield United are well stocked at right-back with Chelsea loanee Alfie Gilchrist but Walker’s versatility across the back line will be a useful tool in the future. He is a leader figure and a return to Yorkshire could be the stepping stone into a career in coaching or management.
