Norwich City goalkeeper Archie Mair has opened up about his frantic transfer to Motherwell, following an eventful 24 hours that saw him thrust into the starting line-up for the Premiership side.
The 22-year-old joined the Scottish club on loan after a series of unforeseen events left Motherwell short of goalkeeping options.
A Last-Minute Call to Action
Mair’s move came after Motherwell’s first-choice goalkeeper, Aston Oxborough, dislocated his thumb, and West Ham United recalled backup Krisztián Hegyi. With no senior keepers available, manager Stuart Kettlewell turned to Mair, who had been in training with Norwich and preparing for a game on Sunday.
Speaking about the whirlwind transfer, Mair said:
“It has been a whirlwind. I came in from training on Friday, had a meeting, and then got a phone call saying, ‘get ready, get yourself up the road.’” He added, “I gathered my boots, drove to Stansted, flew up, stayed in a hotel Friday night, and met the boys before the game. It was tough but at the same time, you just want to go and play.”
“When I got the phone call after training yesterday, I was delighted and raring to go. There weren’t any questions on my part. I was straight in the car and driving to the airport, all happy.”

Thrown Into the Action
Mair made his debut just a day after arriving, stepping into the starting XI for Motherwell’s 3-1 loss to Hibernian. Despite the result, the young keeper showcased resilience and composure under challenging circumstances. He admitted that meeting his new teammates for the first time on matchday was far from ideal but expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play.
Senior Experience and Mentorship
Mair, who joined Norwich from Aberdeen in 2020, has gained valuable experience working alongside established goalkeepers like Tim Krul, Angus Gunn, and Joe Lewis. He said, “I’ve been lucky with the senior goalkeepers I’ve had at all clubs. They’ve all been really good to work with and learn from.”
With previous loan spells at Morecambe, Notts County, and Gateshead, Mair has accumulated significant experience in senior football. However, after spending the first half of this season as Norwich’s third-choice keeper, he was eager to return to regular action.
Writer’s View
Archie Mair’s swift move to Motherwell highlights the unpredictable nature of football transfers, especially during the January window. For the player, it’s a chance to step out of the shadows and establish himself as a key figure in the Scottish Premiership. Motherwell, meanwhile, have gained a motivated and talented goalkeeper who has already shown his ability to adapt under pressure.
