Blackburn Rovers Set For Transfer Window Disappointment

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has downplayed the likelihood of Jeffrey Schlupp leaving the club during the January transfer window, despite reported interest from Blackburn Rovers.

The 32-year-old versatile midfielder has been linked with a move to Ewood Park, but Glasner appears determined to retain his services. It won’t be the first blow the club will receive this window, as their pursuit of Ben Brereton Diaz also looks doomed to fail.

Schlupp’s Importance to Palace

Speaking to the South London Press, Glasner emphasised the value of Schlupp’s experience and versatility within a squad that injuries have stretched. “I want to keep the squad together – we don’t have a huge amount of outfield players,” Glasner said. “I really appreciate Jeffrey’s experience, and he can play in different positions.”

Schlupp, who featured in Palace’s FA Cup victory over Stockport County on Saturday, has proven to be a reliable option across multiple roles. Glasner highlighted his ability to operate as a left-footed wing-back, a central midfielder, or even in an attacking role, depending on the team’s needs.

“He is so experienced – he can play almost anywhere. But Schluppy is now 32 and his contract ends in the summer. If he wants to have a change with two or three years on a contract, he will come [and tell me].” – Oliver Glasner

Uncertain Future for Schlupp

While Glasner is keen to keep Schlupp at Selhurst Park, he acknowledged the possibility that the player may seek a longer contract and more consistent game time elsewhere. Schlupp’s current deal expires this summer, potentially opening the door for a transfer if Blackburn or another suitor meets Palace’s demands.

Blackburn Rovers, currently vying for promotion in the Championship, are reportedly eager to strengthen their squad with experienced players like Schlupp. However, Glasner revealed that no formal transfer request has been made by the player, which he sees as a positive sign for Palace’s hopes of retaining him.

Writer’s View

Jeffrey Schlupp’s situation encapsulates the challenges faced by clubs and players during the January transfer window. For Palace, his versatility and experience make him a valuable asset, particularly given their limited squad depth. For Blackburn, Schlupp represents an opportunity to add proven quality to their promotion push.
