Leeds United are believed to be leading a Premier League side in the race to sign defender Nico Elvedi.
The Swiss international is currently at Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga, with the club currently eighth place in the German top flight.
Farke Link Gives Advantage
According to reports from Ben Jacobs in TeamTALK, Leeds United have ‘genuine interest’ in signing Elvedi as they look to strengthen their defensive options. However, a move would likely be made in the summer.
Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers are also linked to the 28-year-old but it is believed the Elland Road club lead the race due to manager Daniel Farke working with Elvedi at Gladbach between 2022 and 2023.
Another factor is playing into Leeds’ hands with Wolves currently eyeing up a move for Lens defender Kevin Danso in the winter transfer window.
Leeds are still in the process of finding a permanent solution to Max Wober’s future, with Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg making their interest public ahead of the window. A recent report in The Athletic suggested that The Whites will look to sign a replacement before sanctioning any exit for the defender.
They may also be forced into further moves should Tottenham act on reported interest for Pascal Struijk from Tottenham Hotspur. Leeds have recently been linked to a move for Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga in this window.
Writer’s View
A move for Nico Elvedi would be brilliant for Leeds given his stature within the game and still having a good number of years still left in his prime. Having him at the club should they obtain promotion to the Premier League will level up their current defensive lineup and also adds more flexibility with the Swiss international also capable of playing right-back. Should these plans come to fruition and should they tie down Junior Firpo’s future at Elland Road, Leeds could be the team to break the cycle of the three promoted Championship clubs being favourites to be relegated in the Premier League.
