Leeds United Chasing Defender From Championship Rivals

Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Millwall defender Japhet Tanganga during the January transfer window, as reported by The Express.

Tanganga joined the Lions on a permanent deal from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer following a loan spell at The Den.

Interest In Tanganga Growing

Millwall could well have a difficult January window in trying to keep hold of a player they only signed in the summer. The 25-year-old has been in impressive form so far this campaign and has even chipped in with two goals.

According to the Express report, Leeds is not alone in their interest in the former Spurs player as Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg and Premier Division strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers have been credited with an interest in the former England Under 21 international.

Number One Choice

Former Millwall manager Neil Harris spoke via BBC Sport in July after securing Tanganga’s services permanently.

He was the number one target over the summer.”

“He has fitted perfectly in the dressing room, the fans have taken to him immediately with his performances and the way he plays the game with a big heart. He’s just a very, very good player.”

Why Tanganga?

Since joining Millwall on a permanent basis, Tanganga has been an excellent performer at the heart of his side’s defence. He has played 20 of 23 league matches so far this season and he ranks highly among his fellow defenders.

Areas where he has been particularly impressive include:

  • 22 tackles won
  • 114 duels won
  • 58 aerial duels won
  • 78 recoveries

He has also shown he is not afraid to get forward, adding two goals and taking 25 shots at the opposition’s goal so far this season.

The Spurs academy graduate has established himself in the Millwall side and is gaining valuable Championship experience. His time with Tottenham saw him make 50 appearances for the club and enjoy loan spells at Bundesliga side Augsburg as well as at The Den.

Writer’s View

Tanganga has had an impressive few months with Millwall and new boss Alex Neil would be loath to lose a player of that quality as he looks to stamp his authority on the team.

From the player’s perspective, a move to top of the table must surely be an attractive proposition but he must ask himself how often will he play. Daniel Farke is favouring a centre-back pairing of Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon with Ethan Ampadu skilfully able to cover when needed.

If this leaves Tanganga as the third centre-back and on the bench then perhaps remaining at Millwall would be a better option.
