Champions League Side Eye Leeds United Player

Leeds United defender Max Wober is once again being targeted by Red Bull Salzburg ahead of the January transfer window.

The Austrian defender has only played three matches for Daniel Farke’s side this season following a season-long loan at Borussia Monchengladbach in 2023/24. He was signed by The Whites during their spell in the Premier League but were relegated that season.

Salzburg Return To Target

Pep Ljinders’ side had previously seen the 26-year-old as a target in the summer transfer window but failed to sign him. Now, according to reports from Austrian outlet Kurier, the Champions League side are renewing their interest in Wober as well as Feyenoord’s Gernot Trauner.

The Austrian has rarely been an option for Leeds since their relegation from the Premier League and was a casualty during the club’s injury crisis which also saw Ethan Ampadu and Pascal Struijk sidelined. Farke was forced into using the free agent market with the signing of former Mainz centre-back Joshua Guilavogui in October.

Salzburg’s director, Rouven Schroder, had commented on the potential to sign both Wober and Trauner, saying (Quotes via Sport Witness):

“They are two very good players. We have a young team, so experienced players are of course exciting. But a lot of points have to be right, and we’ll examine transfers carefully.”

Leeds’ defensive worries have eased, with Wales defender Ampadu looking set to return in the near future.

Writer’s View

Max Wober never worked out for Leeds United and has rarely been a feature in Daniel Farke’s plans. Other defenders have taken precedence and the move for Joshua Guilavogui has paid off well so far, meaning the Austrian has been knocked even further down the pecking order at Elland Road. A sale is best for both parties, but Leeds will want to get the most bang for their buck after paying £10 million to sign him back in January 2023.
