Former Northampton Town Defender Makes Non League Switch To Former EFL Side

Journeyman defender Nicky Adams has made yet another move at 39 years old, making a return to Bury for the fourth time in his career.

The 39-year-old played for The Shakers in 2019 when the club was kicked from the EFL during their financial crisis before moving to Northampton Town on a free transfer.

Gigg Lane Return

Football returned to Bury following the collapse of the original football team, and two teams merged to become the successor to that side with football being played at Gigg Lane since 2023. The Shakers are currently in the North West Counties Football League, the ninth tier of English football.

The club announced the return of Adams from Radcliffe FC via social media, with the full-back stating:

“I just think it’s the perfect time.

“As soon as I knew the opportunity was there for me to come back, it was just a no-brainer for myself.

“I’ve got a lot of history with this football club. I’m absolutely buzzing and I can’t thank everyone [enough] for making it happen.”

The former Carlisle United and Crawley Town player is combining the work alongside an academy coaching role he has at National League outfit Oldham Athletic, a club he played for previously.

Writer’s View

It is a heartwarming story to see Nicky Adams return to Bury FC with the club now looking much brighter from those days in 2019. Adams led Radcliffe up to the National League North last season and can help a side which is the biggest in their league move up the table after narrowly missing out on promotion last season. The appetite for football never left the Greater Manchester Town and the fanbase are fully behind the club. They have three games in hand on the league leaders at the moment, and should they win they will be four points clear at the summit.
