Sheffield Wednesday Show Interest In Premier League Defender

Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly enquired about the services of Southampton’s Ronnie Edwards as the January transfer window gets ready to open.

The 21-year-old was signed by The Saints under former Swansea City boss Russell Martin, but has found his minutes limited since arriving from Peterborough United.

Owls Look To Strengthen Defence

According to the Sheffield Star, Wednesday have already ‘made enquiries’ to loan in Edwards for the remainder of the season as Southampton are predicted to give him minutes elsewhere.

The centre-back will be a familiar face to The Owls, as he played in the League One play-off semi-final for Peterborough which saw one of the great comebacks which led the Hillsborough side to a promotion that season. The following season for Posh saw them fall in the play-offs once more and saw their defensive talents poached following the defeat to Oxford United.

Edwards went to Southampton, with left-back Harrison Burrows joining Steel City rivals Sheffield United and centre-back partner Josh Knight went abroad to German side Hannover 96 on a free transfer.

Now in their second season and under the leadership of Danny Rohl, who was briefly linked to the Southampton job, Wednesday are thriving and putting last season’s relegation worries firmly in the rearview mirror.

The club have good relations with the Hampshire side due to the success of Shea Charles’ loan move, which is believed to put them in good stead to make a move for Edwards.

Writer’s View

Ronnie Edwards proved himself to be the standout defender in League One last season and has gone into a very tricky situation at Southampton. Even with all their defensive issues, he was never given any chance to prove himself in the Premier League. A move to the Championship will be brilliant for him and Sheffield Wednesday would be a good choice for him. The club are progressing well and he has a chance to develop with the help of an ambitious coach like Danny Rohl and alongside some experienced teammates like Max Lowe and Marvin Johnson.
