Plymouth Argyle are believed to be “confident” in renewing the contract of one of their current players, alongside entering the race for another transfer target.
Wayne Rooney’s side have struggled consistently across the season and are stuck at the bottom of the league but are just one point away from safety going into Boxing Day. However, there have been a few bright spots in their campaign, including Andre Gray.
Pilgrims Look For Extension
According to a report from journalist Darren Witcoop, Argyle are “confident” in signing the former Jamaican international to a contract extension, with his current deal expiring on January 3rd. He joined in October as a free agent after leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Riyadh in the summer.
Gray has featured in 10 Championship games so far, scoring three times and assisting once in those matches and was man of the match in their game against former side Watford at the end of November.
PL Youngster A January Target
The same report from Witcoop also named Jayden Danns as a player being pursued by Plymouth among other Championship sides. The Liverpool player was a feature of their EFL Cup final win last season and has had sporadic appearances since then with the first team.
He has been a player Rooney’s side have monitored in the past, with a report from Alan Nixon in November also linking the 18-year-old with a move to Home Park. Argyle have had fitness problems with their current crop of strikers across the season, with Burnley loanee Michael Obafemi and Muhamed Tijani currently both sidelines with issues.
Writer’s View
It makes sense that Wayne Rooney will want to strengthen at all costs his current lineup of attackers. Andre Gray has scored three times and is the club’s top goalscorer so securing him to a new deal will be a benefit for his side. Jayden Danns is an interesting but largely untested talent at the moment, and banking all of their hopes on the 18-year-old is an extremely risky move. Argyle should look to bring in other attackers alongside Danns and shed some of their other options in January.
