Danny Cowley felt that Colchester United‘s massive victory over Swindon Town was yet another step towards becoming “a good team”.
The U’s completely played Ian Holloway’s side off the park in the first half, scoring four times in 38 minutes before holding firm to claim a vital three points and a bonus clean sheet in Essex.
Cowley Praises Effort
Speaking to the Daily Gazette, former Portsmouth boss Cowley was glowing with praise about his side’s performance on the night.
“We’re six unbeaten and we’re growing to become a good team, which is good. When we become a good team, we put two halves together and we get real control in that second half and we win the game six or seven.
“But we’re not that team at the moment, we’re a team that is moving in the right direction. I thought we were really clinical, on the transition. We pressed it well, we turned it over really well and we were really ruthless.
“That’s what good teams do and that’s what good players do.
“We definitely owe the fans because I think so often this season, they’ve stayed with us when maybe we’ve had injuries and things haven’t gone quite so well or here, where we haven’t been able to find the first goal.
“It was definitely payback for them and I’m so pleased that they enjoyed the evening.”
Colchester were the only team in the bottom half of the League Two table to win on the night, allowing them to make big gains on their rivals and have now opened up a seven-point gap on Carlisle United in 23rd. They play Notts County in their next game.
Writer’s View
It was undoubtedly a great result for Colchester United but it did not feel season-defining. Swindon Town are in a very tricky spot both on and off the pitch and whilst certainly the result is cause to celebrate for U’s fans, it does not have the same gravitas that a result like beating Notts County in their next game could have. They have hit a good stride of late and they do definitely have the chance to cause an upset against The Magpies.
