Colchester United manager Danny Cowley has expressed his determination to shed the label of “draw specialists” and transform his team into consistent winners in League Two.
The U’s have drawn eight league games this season, more than any other team across the top four divisions of English football.
Frustration with Missed Opportunities
Colchester have shared the spoils in five of their last seven matches, leaving Cowley eager to convert these near-misses into victories. Speaking ahead of their trip to Grimsby Town, the manager reflected on his side’s progress since his arrival but emphasised the need to take the next step.
“I don’t like the term draw specialists, but I am starting to think like we are as it’s eight draws now,” said Cowley. “Probably at least five or six of those, we feel we should have won on the balance of play but haven’t quite been able to find those wins. That’s something that we’re working hard to find.”
Cowley noted that while his team has become more competitive, the focus must now shift to achieving consistent results by scoring first and avoiding the need to chase games.
A Tough Run Ahead
Colchester face a challenging schedule, beginning with a televised lunchtime clash against seventh-placed Grimsby Town on Saturday. Fans travelling to Blundell Park will need to contend with an early start for the 12:30pm kick-off. The U’s will then face another long trip to Fleetwood Town for a similar early fixture the following week.
“I feel sorry for our supporters, because I can only imagine what time they’ll have to get up to get up to Grimsby and then up to Fleetwood, for those midday kick-offs,” Cowley remarked. “But we have an opportunity to get ahead of the fixtures, put a really good performance together and hopefully, a positive result.”
Looking to Climb the Table
Despite the challenges, Cowley remains optimistic. He praised Grimsby Town as a formidable opponent but believes his team has the potential to secure a crucial victory. With consistent performances and a shift in mentality, Colchester aim to climb higher in the League Two standings.
Writer’s View
Danny Cowley’s focus on converting draws into wins underscores the competitive edge he is trying to instill at Colchester. While the team has made strides in becoming harder to beat, achieving early goals and controlling games will be key to their success. The upcoming matches against Grimsby and Fleetwood present a chance to build momentum and demonstrate their intent to rise in the League Two table.
