Luton Town’s Jacob Brown has candidly admitted that the players must take accountability for their dreadful away form after the Hatters suffered their sixth consecutive road defeat, losing 4-2 to Norwich City.
Despite leading twice during the match, Luton’s defensive frailties cost them dearly once again, leaving the striker frustrated but resolute.
Players Take the Blame
Speaking after the match, Brown stressed that the responsibility for the ongoing struggles lies firmly with the squad, not manager Rob Edwards. The striker acknowledged the team’s inability to perform under pressure away from home, pointing to individual errors as the root cause of their woes.
“We’re not going to hide away from the fact that we’ve not been good enough, especially away from home. In all fairness to the gaffer, he always comes and takes the stick, but it’s on us. We’re the ones on the pitch making the errors… It’s embarrassing going over to the fans at the end. We don’t want to have that feeling, but it’s what we deserve right now,” Brown stated.
Luton initially took the lead through Elijah Adebayo’s composed finish, but defensive lapses allowed Ante Crnac to turn the game around for Norwich before half-time. Brown managed to equalise early in the second half, but late goals from Emiliano Marcondes and Borja Sainz once again exposed the Hatters’ vulnerability at the back.
“We Need to Be More Resilient”
Brown expressed his frustration at the team’s defensive collapse, particularly in the latter stages of matches. With Luton now having conceded 21 goals in their six away defeats this season, the striker urged his teammates to demonstrate greater resilience and address their issues collectively.
“When we got back to 2-2, we were on top of the game. But then we just gifted them a goal and then another goal. We can’t expect to get anything from games when we play like that. The travelling fans deserve better,” he admitted.
Writer’s View
Luton’s ongoing away struggles are emblematic of deeper defensive frailties that need immediate attention. While Jacob Brown’s openness and accountability are commendable, the team’s inability to hold onto leads suggests a lack of mental toughness and cohesion. If the Hatters hope to salvage their season, Edwards must work closely with his squad to instil discipline and resolve in high-pressure situations.
