Derby County manager Paul Warne has admitted that striker Conor Washington could leave Pride Park in January if his first-team opportunities don’t improve.
The 31-year-old has yet to make a Championship appearance this season and has not featured on the bench, despite being fit and training well.
Honest Conversations About the Future
With Washington in the final year of his contract, Warne has acknowledged the forward’s frustration and revealed that discussions about his future will take place closer to the transfer window. The Rams boss praised Washington’s professionalism but admitted that the lack of opportunities could lead the striker to seek regular football elsewhere.
“I’ve had really honest conversations with Conor and just said, ‘look, you will have to wait for an opportunity.’ Come January, if he has had no opportunities, and I know how the world works, he may want to play elsewhere,” Warne told DerbyshireLive.
Warne also reflected on how senior players often become less patient as they approach the latter stages of their careers, prioritising game time over other considerations. However, he maintained that the decision would ultimately be made in Derby County’s best interests.
Waiting for the Right Opportunity
Washington’s current situation highlights the competitive nature of Derby’s forward options. Despite his strong performances in training, the striker has been unable to break into a team that has relied on other players delivering consistent performances. Warne noted that while he respects Washington’s ambitions, decisions about departures will be made carefully.
“If it is the right thing for the club that he stays, then that’s the decision we will make,” Warne said, adding that mutual respect will guide any discussions about the striker’s future.
Club’s Priorities in January
With the January transfer window approaching, Derby County are preparing for potential player movements to balance the squad and address any gaps. Washington’s situation could add another layer to their planning as the club weighs its options.
Writer’s View
Conor Washington’s case illustrates the delicate balance Paul Warne faces as Derby County manager. While the striker’s professionalism and experience make him a valuable squad member, his lack of game time raises valid concerns. A move in January could benefit both parties, giving Washington the chance to reignite his career and allowing Derby to make adjustments in their squad ahead of the crucial second half of the season.
