Reading manager Ruben Selles has confirmed that defender Amadou Mbengue will be sidelined for “some days” following a contact injury sustained during the Royals’ 2-1 victory over Peterborough United.
Despite this setback, Selles remains confident in his squad’s depth ahead of their upcoming clash with Barnsley.
Injury Details
Mbengue, who also received his fifth yellow card of the season during the match, is set to miss Tuesday’s trip to Oakwell regardless of his fitness. Speaking to the media, Selles provided a positive update, indicating the injury is not expected to keep the 22-year-old out for long.
“It is a contact injury. It is swelling a little bit right now, but we don’t expect any major injury, maybe some days out. He is out anyway for the next game so hopefully he will be back for the first game he can be available,” Selles said.
Mbengue’s absence will require a reshuffle in Reading’s defensive line, which already displayed resilience against Peterborough, featuring two teenagers, a midfielder, and an out-of-position full-back. The makeshift backline impressed with their composure, holding firm to secure a hard-fought victory.
Young Talent Stepping Up
Selles highlighted the performances of younger players, including Tyler Bindon, Michael Craig, Jeriel Dorsett, and debutant Abraham Kanu. Kanu, who has recently returned from injury, made a significant contribution after coming off the bench.
“Abraham [Kanu] has been training well in the last few weeks and he deserved his moment. He proved today that he can play, and we saw today the player that we saw in pre-season. We need to be robust and go again,” Selles added.
Selles also expressed optimism about the potential availability of Harlee Dean and Louie Holzman for the Barnsley match, noting their recent strong performances in training.
Squad Depth Key to Success
The Reading boss praised the adaptability of his squad and the promising performances from younger players, suggesting they are prepared for the challenges ahead. With a tough fixture list looming, Selles plans to assess his options carefully and make tactical adjustments as necessary.
Writer’s View
Ruben Selles’ confidence in his young squad reflects a proactive approach to managing injuries and squad depth. While Mbengue’s absence is a setback, the emergence of players like Kanu and the flexibility of the backline provide reasons for optimism. Tuesday’s match against Barnsley will test Reading’s resilience, but if the youthful defence continues to perform, the Royals can build on their momentum in League One.
