Huddersfield Town head coach Michael Duff is encouraging his players to emulate the composure of title favourites Birmingham City as the Terriers continue their strong League One campaign.
The team recorded their sixth consecutive home victory on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic, extending their unbeaten league run to six matches.
Sharing Goals and Finding a Way
With no prolific striker leading the line, Huddersfield have relied on contributions from across the squad. Matty Pearson and David Kasumu were the scorers in the weekend’s match, exemplifying the team’s collective approach. Duff highlighted the importance of patience in their build-up play, especially given the absence of a traditional target man.
“That’s what we need to get better at because we’ve some good footballers and some of the passages of play were really good,” Duff said. “But we need to do it a bit more consistently. It’s six on the spin now at home and six unbeaten. We are finding a way.”
Duff also acknowledged fans’ desire for more direct play but stressed the importance of making smart decisions in the final third.
“Sometimes, you have to be a little bit calmer and pick and choose your moment when to go in rather than having to put the ball into the box and forcing a pass,” he added. “The more you win, the better you get at it.”
Herbie Kane’s Standout Performance
Midfielder Herbie Kane earned special praise from Duff, who labelled him the standout player on the pitch against Charlton.
“I thought Herbie Kane was the best player on the pitch by an absolute mile,” Duff said. “He’s showing that it’s Herbie Kane we’ve actually signed and not his twin brother!”
Kane’s composed display underlined Huddersfield’s ability to control games through their midfield, a critical factor in their recent success.
Injury Setbacks Loom
Despite the positive run, Duff’s squad has been hit by injuries, with Matty Pearson (ankle) and Rhys Healey (calf) expected to be sidelined for significant periods. This latest misfortune will test the team’s depth as they prepare for a challenging away match against Leyton Orient on Tuesday.
“I don’t think either of them are particularly good for anything in the near future,” Duff admitted.
Writer’s View
Michael Duff’s emphasis on patience and composure is paying dividends for Huddersfield Town, as evidenced by their strong home form and unbeaten streak. However, the loss of key players like Pearson and Healey will present a challenge. If the team continues to share responsibilities and take inspiration from top sides like Birmingham City, they can maintain their push for promotion.
