Morecambe Snatch Three Points In Huge Bottom Of The Table Clash

Morecambe came away with all three points from the huge clash at the foot of League Two, bringing themselves to within goal difference of getting out of the bottom two.

The defeat sees Swindon Town’s winless run stretch to six matches.

Shrimps Take Half-Time Lead

It took Morecambe just six minutes to get their noses in front following a well-worked short corner saw Luke Hendrie deliver the sort of cross attackers dream of. It was defender Jamie Stott who got his head onto the ball to guide it home.

Just eight minutes later it was two when another well-worked set piece saw Ben Tollitt fire home from a tight angle. The lead was halved just after half an hour when a long Swindon free kick was headed into the path of substitute Aaron Drinan. Drinan helped the ball on and over visiting keeper Harry Burgoyne.

Striker Haunts Former Club

Just four minutes into the second half, the Robins levelled through Ryan Delaney. The centre-back struck a low right-footed effort into the net when the Morecambe defence had failed to deal with a long throw.

With just 12 minutes left to play, Morecambe took the lead again through former Swindon frontman Hallam Hope. The striker latched onto a long ball forward before rifling his effort into the net, giving Jack Bycroft no chance.

Holloway Disappointed With Lack Of Desire

Home boss Ian Holloway was frustrated with his side for their lack of desire and failure to get the basics right.

“You have got to defend better than that in the first 20 minutes. In a game where it is wet and windy and the other team have got nothing to lose to catch you.”

“They showed that desire and I don’t think we did.”

“That is nothing like the boys, that is nothing like we normally look like, and nothing like we prepared.”

“Well done to them but that was awful.”

We have got to sort these basics out, things like set plays when you have to go and win your header and get the distances right.”

Writer’s View

This result now sees the bottom three sides in the division level on points and sets up a fascinating race to survival. Ian Holloway needs to change his side’s poor form before they find themselves adrift at the foot of the table. A second win in three League Two outings for Morecambe will give them hope of pulling away from the drop zone.
