Millwall goalkeeper Lukas Jensen has transformed his Lions career after a tough start, emerging as a key figure in one of the Championship’s most resolute defences.
The Dane, 25, joined the Lions this summer, stepping into the gloves of the late Matija Sarkic. However, his early performances were challenging, conceding seven goals in his first two games.
Jensen’s journey has since been one of determination and adaptation. Sitting down with NewsAtDen, the former Burnley keeper explained how he overcame early struggles, adjusted to the higher demands of the Championship, and is now thriving under Neil Harris’ leadership.
Adapting to Championship Football
Jensen’s career path has been far from ordinary. After joining Burnley in 2019, he spent years gaining experience on loan at Accrington Stanley and Lincoln City before Millwall offered him a chance in the Championship. Despite playing 45 games in League One last season, Jensen admits the step up to Championship football required a period of adjustment.
“The Championship is a step up from League One, and I could definitely feel there’s a difference in the quality of the players. It took the whole pre-season and a few games into the season, but once I had figured out the level, I think I’ve shown I’m good enough to play here,” Jensen said.
In addition to his personal transition, Jensen faced the challenge of working with an unfamiliar backline, which contributed to early struggles. The arrival of experienced players like Japhet Tanganga has since solidified the defence, with the Lions conceding just six goals in their last thirteen league matches.
Resilience Leads to Success
Millwall’s recent form has been remarkable, with clean sheets in five of their last seven games. Jensen credits the turnaround to Harris’ tactical approach and the team’s determination to remain difficult to beat.
“We take pride in not conceding goals. If you take the first two games away, we’ve figured out how to play and make it work for us. If we’re a team that’s hard to beat, it gives us the best opportunity to go and win games,” Jensen said.
With seven clean sheets so far, Jensen is well on track to challenge for the Golden Glove, setting himself a target of matching the nineteen clean sheets he achieved last season. Despite the pressure of holding narrow leads, the Dane’s composure and leadership have been vital in Millwall’s 1-0 victories.
