Wrexham have been tipped to miss out on a play-off place by expert data analyst Opta, according to latest calculations.
The Red Dragons have enjoyed a meteoric rise in recent years. The purchase of the club by Hollywood superstars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has catapulted the club into the public eye, with their recent successes having been well documented on streaming service Disney+.
Winning the National League in dramatic circumstances in 2023 provided a catalyst for the following season. They went on to secure back-to-back promotions with a second placed finish in League Two and are now looking for a third success in League One.
Championship Beckoning?
Phil Parkinson’s side have enjoyed an excellent few months to life in League One. They currently sit third in the table, two points behind second placed Birmingham City. However, the Blues do possess two games in hand whilst table toppers Wycombe Wanderers have played a game less.
Wrexham had a chance to move into the automatic promotion places at the weekend when they look on last season’s League Two champions Stockport County at Edgeley Park. They were unable to capitalise though, slipping to a third defeat of the season thanks to a solitary Louie Barry strike.
Wrexham Predicted For Heartbreak
With Wycombe and Birmingham both looking like the dominant teams in the division, Wrexham have been handed just a 3.62% chance of gaining automatic promotion for the third successive year. Furthermore, they have been tipped by Opta to slip out of the top six places altogether.
Following the number-crunching, the North Wales-based side are predicted to finish seventh, one place below a play-off qualification place. It is said that they will gain 73 points, one less than sixth-placed Huddersfield Town.
Lincoln City and Barnsley are forecasted to finish fourth and fifth respectively and despite their inconsistent start, Bolton Wanderers are in third.
Writer’s View
Maintaining their place in League One after two seasons of euphoria wouldn’t be a disaster by any stretch of the imagination. However, that isn’t in the script and the makers of the ‘Welcome To Wrexham’ documentary are banking on another promotion. It must be said that they do look good value for that at the moment, but last weekend’s defeat against Stockport County was a stark reminder of just how tough this division is.
They have three tough home fixtures coming up against Exeter City, Lincoln and Barnsley. After those, we should have some kind of idea as to just how competitive they will be for the remainder of the campaign.
