‘Have to Wait and See’:  Sheffield Wednesday Man On Contract Talks

Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith has provided an honest assessment of his uncertain contract situation, admitting that he is focusing on his performances to ensure the best possible outcome.

With his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, Smith’s future at Hillsborough is yet to be decided. Smith, who recently played his 100th game for the Owls during their clash against city rivals Sheffield United, has made it clear that his priority remains working hard and contributing to the team’s efforts on the pitch.

The milestone marks only the second time in his career that the forward has reached such a figure, the first being with Rotherham United.

Wait and See

Speaking to The Star, Smith acknowledged the difficulties of dealing with uncertainty, especially as a family man. However, he remains optimistic, believing that his daily commitment will eventually bear fruit.

“It’s tough, especially with a young family, but as a footballer I think all you can do is concentrate on what you can control – and that’s coming in every day and working hard, and doing everything right on your end,” Smith said.

While there have been preliminary conversations regarding a new deal, Smith explained that the demanding schedule has prevented more detailed discussions from taking place. With important fixtures piling up, including the upcoming match against Cardiff City, the striker understands why his contract talks have been delayed.

“We’ve had a few conversations, but the games have come thick and fast recently, so it’s been pushed to the side – which is fully understandable,” Smith added. “Whether those conversations are picked up in the next week or so we’ll have to wait and see. But obviously, the manager is fully focused on the games coming up – as am I, as is the group. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.”

The Owls have long valued Smith’s steady performances and leadership qualities, but with the January transfer window fast approaching, speculation over his future is likely to increase. A consistent performer, Smith’s contract status could draw interest from clubs across the Championship.
