Middlesbrough stormed past Luton Town with a dominant 5-1 win at Riverside Stadium, thanks to standout performances from Delano Burgzorg and Finn Azaz.
Burgzorg’s brace and Azaz’s commanding display left Luton reeling, deepening pressure on manager Rob Edwards as the Hatters hover near the Championship relegation zone.
The first half saw Middlesbrough assert control after a somewhat balanced opening. The breakthrough came on the half-hour mark as Burgzorg, returning to the starting lineup, coolly slotted home a well-executed set-piece. Ben Doak’s smart flick from a low Azaz corner set up Burgzorg, who fired home his first Championship goal for Boro. Shortly after, Emmanuel Latte Lath displayed remarkable skill, controlling a delicate Azaz pass and twisting away from defenders to double the lead before halftime.
Boro Turn Up the Heat in the Second Half
The second half started as fiercely as the first ended, with Middlesbrough refusing to ease their grip. Just six minutes in, Azaz found the net himself, capitalising on another Doak assist to make it 3-0. Luton’s defence continued to struggle, and moments later, Burgzorg struck again, taking advantage of a pulled-out Thomas Kaminski to slot the ball into an empty net and extend the lead to four.
Luton managed to pull one back in the 77th minute when Jordan Clark converted a pass from Tom Krauß, offering a glimmer of consolation. However, Boro’s attacking persistence paid off once more when Azaz delivered the game’s final goal. From the edge of the area, he curled a beautiful finish to complete the comprehensive win.
Middlesbrough’s commanding display moves them into sixth place, depending on later results, while Luton’s eighth defeat in 15 games since their relegation puts Edwards under scrutiny as his side risks sliding further toward the relegation places.
Boro manager Michael Carrick made four changes, including the return of Dutch striker Burgzorg, who proved crucial in breaking down the opposition. In contrast, Luton, dealing with key absences like Alfie Doughty, made five changes but failed to keep pace with Middlesbrough’s high-energy attack.
With this defeat, Luton faces an uphill battle to stabilise their season after a challenging return to the Championship.

Writer’s View
Middlesbrough’s resounding win over Luton reflects their rise in form under Carrick, blending youthful energy and experience. With Burgzorg’s clinical finishing and Azaz’s creative playmaking, Boro looks poised for a potential playoff run. Luton, however, must urgently address defensive gaps to avoid getting dragged into a relegation dogfight.
