Coventry City Draw Up Managerial Shortlist

Coventry City have drawn up a three-man shortlist as they look to fill their vacant managerial position following the dismissal of Mark Robins earlier this week.

The Sky Blues sent shockwaves through the Championship when they made the decision to part company with Robins. The 54-year-old was popular with supporters having guided the club from League Two to the Championship, where he game within one game of reaching the Premier League in 2023. He also came within a whisker of the FA Cup final last season after they suffered a penalty shootout defeat against Manchester United in the semi final in April.

Nonetheless, there is no getting away from the fact that Coventry have endured a poor start to the season. Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat against Derby County left them languishing in 17th, level on points with Plymouth Argyle who occupy the final relegation spot.

Who Next For Coventry City?

According to Football InsiderCoventry have set their sights on three potential successors to their long term manager. It is claimed the former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will enter into talks with the East Midlands-based club next week as he looks to return to management.

The 46-year-old has been without a club since departing the Blues in 2023, where he took charge for a second time following the departure of Graham Potter. He has been linked with a number of clubs since but could be given his next opportunity at the CBS Arena.

It is also claimed that the Sky Blues are keen on Blackburn Rovers boss John Eustace and Swansea City assistant Alan Sheehan. Eustace has performed an admirable job at Ewood Park, with this afternoon’s 3-1 win over Cardiff City seeing the club move up to ninth in the Championship.

Sheehan is highly rated at Swansea having joined the club in 2023. He briefly took over as interim manager at the end of last year after Michael Duff was sacked in December.

Writer’s View

Coventry’s decision to part company with Mark Robins was met with disbelief by supporters. He is someone that was hugely popular and had instilled a real belief that he could be the man that ends their 23 year stay outside the Premier League. As a result, they need to get their next appointment right and whoever ends up landing the job could find themselves under pressure from the off.

Lampard is the current favourite to land the position as he looks to rebuild his management career after poor stints at Everton and Chelsea. It’s difficult to see Eustace leaving Blackburn but Sheehan could be a viable option.
