Austrian forward Andreas Weimann netted twice as Blackburn Rovers claimed a commanding 3-1 win over Cardiff City at the Cardiff City Stadium, ending a streak of three away defeats for the Rovers.
Weimann’s double put Blackburn ahead, while a late goal from Lewis Baker sealed the victory, marking a tough week for the Bluebirds after back-to-back losses.
The visitors took the lead in the first half when a well-executed move from defence allowed Lewis Travis to deliver a pinpoint cross for Weimann, who tapped in from close range. Weimann doubled his tally shortly after halftime, again unmarked in the box, as Blackburn’s sharp play up front kept Cardiff on the back foot.
Weimann’s Clinical Finishing Sets Rovers Apart
Cardiff, hoping to extend their impressive home form with a fifth consecutive win, initially looked promising with Rubin Colwill testing Rovers’ keeper Aynsley Pears. However, their efforts lacked the decisive finishing touch that Weimann brought to Blackburn. Despite pressure from Cardiff after the break, Weimann struck again early in the second half, capping off a well-crafted pass from Travis to Harry Pickering, who set up the Austrian for his second tap-in of the game.
The Bluebirds pulled a goal back after Joe Rankin-Costello’s foul on Callum O’Dowda granted Cardiff a penalty. David Turnbull’s spot-kick was saved by Pears, but he pounced on the rebound to put Cardiff back in the game with 15 minutes remaining. The home crowd rallied, sensing a potential comeback, but Blackburn held firm.
Any hope of a Cardiff comeback was dashed late on as substitute Baker beat the Cardiff offside trap and fired a low shot past keeper Jak Alnwick to complete the scoreline. The loss leaves Cardiff with only one win in their last 13 meetings with Blackburn and drops them further down the table after recent progress under interim boss Omer Riza.
Writer’s View
The win marked a rare away triumph for Blackburn, who have struggled on their travels in recent months. With Harry Pickering celebrating his 300th career appearance and Weimann’s sharp display, Blackburn’s renewed energy was evident. Cardiff, meanwhile, struggled to capitalise on their chances, despite the support of nearly 24,000 fans and the pre-game energy boost from Welsh boxing world champion and former Cardiff women’s player Lauren Price, who was honoured before kickoff.
Blackburn’s victory reflects their resilience and shows they’re ready to battle for higher places, while Cardiff will need to regroup quickly to avoid slipping further down the Championship standings.
