Coventry City have made the shock decision to terminate the contract of long-serving manager Mark Robins this morning.
The 54-year-old has managed at the club since 2017 and took charge of just shy of 400 matches but a poor start to the season has spelt the end of his tenure.
“Difficult Decision”
“Coventry City Football Club has made the difficult decision to terminate the contract of Mark Robins as manager with immediate effect.
“The Club is well aware that this is a difficult moment after over seven very successful years at the helm and this decision is not taken lightly.
“The performance of the team over an extended period however have just not been good enough and as such the board of the Club has decided to make an immediate change in leadership.
“The Club will take its time to appoint a successor to Mark, although the position will be that of Head Coach working within the new structure set up by the Club over the last two years.
“The club will shortly appoint an ‘Interim Head Coach’ who will take charge of the team against Sunderland on Saturday.”
Coventry are currently 17th in the Championship but level on goal difference with Plymouth Argyle who occupy the first relegation position. Robins’ last game turned out to be a home loss to Derby County which they lost 1-2.
Writer’s View
Mark Robins for the past decade has been Mr. Coventry City. He has brought them so much joy over that time, from a League One title win, an EFL Trophy victory in his first year back in charge and took them to Wembley and a penalty shoot-out against Luton Town away from a glorious return to the Premier League. This season has fallen short of where the club hoped to be and ultimately that was enough for the ownership at the Sky Blues to act.
However, the club are only seven points off the play-off places and with all the credit Mark Robins has racked up over his time surely deserved a better fate than the one he has got. It feels like this is a decision taken too soon and will surely not go down well with a fanbase that has appreciated him over all this time.
