‘Not The Prettiest’ – Wayne Rooney Assesses Plymouth Argyle Win

Plymouth Argyle scraped past Portsmouth with a late goal from Michael Obafemi, clinching a 1-0 win at Home Park that pulls Wayne Rooney’s side out of the relegation zone.

Despite being under intense pressure for most of the match, Argyle found the breakthrough late, leaving Portsmouth five points adrift at the bottom of the Championship.

Portsmouth Dominate but Fail to Capitalize

Portsmouth set the tone from the first minute, when Regan Poole had a goal disallowed for offside just 48 seconds after redirecting Connor Ogilvie’s shot past Argyle goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw. The visitors continued their early dominance, pressing high and controlling midfield, almost taking the lead as Ogilvie’s 16th-minute header was saved by Grimshaw.

More chances came Portsmouth’s way, with Josh Murphy and Matt Ritchie going close, but the visitors struggled to convert. With a diving header, Ritchie had one of the best opportunities, but Grimshaw’s positioning denied him. Argyle, meanwhile, managed a few attempts, but Darko Gyabi’s miss from 10 yards left the score level at halftime.

Second Half Sees Pompey Threaten, Argyle Steal Win

Portsmouth resumed their attacks after the break, as Freddie Potts and Andre Dozzell tested Grimshaw from distance. Moments later, Murphy narrowly missed connecting with a cross from Kusini Yengi at the far post, keeping the pressure on Argyle.

With just minutes left, Obafemi delivered the decisive moment. Outmuscling Poole after a long goal-kick, the Republic of Ireland forward drove a low shot into the far corner, clinching Argyle’s first win in five games. Although Portsmouth had controlled much of the match, Argyle’s resilience paid off in a hard-fought three points.

“I’m delighted with the three points,” said Rooney. “After the recent run of results, the most important thing was we won the game. Tonight was about getting the basics right. It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but the result was the most important thing.”

Argyle Climb, Pompey Remain Rooted to the Bottom

This crucial win moves Plymouth Argyle to 20th in the Championship, lifting them out of the relegation spots, while Portsmouth remain at the bottom, unable to convert their chances. Rooney’s pragmatic approach brought results, as the focus shifted from style to substance, a necessary pivot for a team battling near the bottom of the table.

Writer’s View

Plymouth’s ability to secure a result under pressure underscores the influence of Rooney’s tactical adjustments. Though not a flawless performance, the team’s resilience and willingness to fight for a late winner could mark a turning point in their season. Portsmouth, by contrast, will rue their missed opportunities, as their inability to finish continues to hamper their survival hopes.
