Sheffield Wednesday returned to winning ways with a solid 2-0 victory over Norwich City at Hillsborough, moving up five places to 13th in the Championship.
First-half goals from Josh Windass and Dominic Iorfa were enough to seal all three points against a depleted Norwich side, who missed several key players due to injuries and slipped to 12th.
Windass and Iorfa Lead First-Half Charge
The Owls set the tone early, taking the lead in the 12th minute. Marvin Johnson’s precise long ball over the Norwich defence found Josh Windass, who controlled the pass brilliantly and slotted home to open the scoring, marking his fourth league goal of the season.
Norwich attempted a quick response, with right-back Kellen Fisher forcing a save from Wednesday’s keeper James Beadle, but it was the hosts who continued to create dangerous chances. Johnson, a constant threat on the wing, delivered a cross to Ike Ugbo, though the forward’s header failed to hit the target.
The Owls’ second goal came in the 34th minute when Shea Charles delivered a looping free-kick into the box. Iorfa rose highest to head it past Norwich keeper George Long, doubling Wednesday’s advantage and setting the home crowd into rapturous applause.
Injury-Stricken Norwich Struggles to Create
Norwich City, plagued by injuries with 11 first-team players sidelined, struggled to find cohesion in attack. Manager Johannes Hoff Thorup, who had labelled the situation “crazy” before the match, watched his side fight hard but ultimately failed to find a breakthrough. Kaide Gordon and Borja Sainz made attempts, but Wednesday’s defence held firm.
Sainz thought he’d pulled one back with a header, only for it to be ruled out for offside, adding to Norwich’s frustrations. Despite a few half-chances, the Canaries couldn’t break through a disciplined Sheffield Wednesday defence.
“Credit to my team. It’s not easy to bounce back from a setback like Saturday’s 6-2 defeat. We focused on our match plan, and today we stopped individual mistakes,” Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield. “They delivered with heart, with passion. It was fantastic to see.”
Rohl’s Men Show Resilience Following Recent Setback
This victory marks Sheffield Wednesday’s first home win in four attempts across all competitions and their first clean sheet since August. Coming off a heavy defeat to Watford, Rohl’s squad displayed determination, executing a disciplined game plan that kept Norwich at bay.
