Salford City Boss Pleased With “Deserved” Result

Karl Robinson felt that Salford City deserved their point away from home against Fleetwood Town in the only League Two fixture of the night.

At a time when some of their league peers were in EFL Trophy action, both The Ammies and Town played their game in hand, following a previous postponement due to The Cod Army’s international callups.

Okoronkwo Saves The Day

Salford did initially take the lead through former Preston North End man Ben Woodburn, but it was Charlie Adam’s side that dominated much of the first half and went into the break level through Ronan Coughlan’s goal just after the half-hour mark.

The home side then seized the lead as the match was entering its final third. Everton loanee Francis Okoronkwo was the hero on the night for City, scoring in the 98th minute to take one point back on the road with them.

The result now puts Salford on the cusp of the play-off places, two points behind the seventh-placed Bradford City as the league takes a pause for the first round of the FA Cup.

Reacting to the result at Highbury, former MK Dons boss Robinson said to the club’s official media:

“I think our play deserved that. I thought we had to make changes at half time even though we weren’t that bad, I didn’t feel like we had any rhythm like we did the other day.”

“In the second half the players came out and looked like a team possessed. We kept believing, I thought we stayed incredibly calm and I’m really happy with how we finished. To get a goal late on, it was well deserved.”

Writer’s View

Salford City finally are looking like they have put last season’s woes behind them and are stringing together consistent results to match that. Whilst Robinson may have thought they were more disjointed than their win away at Colchester, what ultimately matters is the result and Salford have secured another point against a team that was in League One last season. They have a real shot this weekend of advancing in the cup, welcoming a struggling Shrewsbury Town to Greater Manchester and help with the finances to push even higher should they feel they need to invest in January.
