Millwall secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle at The Den, moving the Lions towards mid-table while extending Plymouth’s miserable away form.
Romain Esse’s first-half goal proved decisive as Wayne Rooney’s side struggled to convert their possession into meaningful chances.
Early Drama and Esse’s Winner
Just 13 minutes into the game, Millwall capitalized on a defensive lapse by Bali Mumba. The Plymouth defender hesitated on the ball, allowing Esse to steal possession and drive forward. After a quick exchange with George Honeyman, Esse calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner from 15 yards, giving the home side an early lead.
Plymouth had a golden opportunity to equalize just minutes later. Ryan Hardie found space between Millwall’s defenders, but his header was straight at goalkeeper Lukas Jensen. It was a chance that should have levelled the game, and Plymouth would be left to rue that missed opportunity.
Millwall Hold Firm as Plymouth Struggle
Millwall’s 19-year-old match-winner Esse grew in confidence after his goal, testing Plymouth keeper Daniel Grimshaw with a long-range shot later in the first half. The Lions nearly doubled their advantage early in the second half when Japhet Tanganga delivered a superb pass to Femi Azeez, who found himself one-on-one with Grimshaw. However, Azeez’s heavy first touch allowed Plymouth’s defence to recover and clear the danger.
Despite enjoying plenty of possession, Plymouth lacked creativity and a cutting edge. Millwall’s defence stood firm, limiting the visitors’ chances, while Rooney’s men struggled to string together meaningful attacks in the second half.
The result leaves Plymouth with the worst away record in the Championship, having secured just one point on their travels. Argyle’s fourth consecutive away defeat sees them sit in 21st place, perilously close to the relegation zone. Rooney pinpointed poor officiating as one of the reasons for their defeat.
“We should have had a penalty. Again, another decision went against us,” said a frustrated Wayne Rooney. “It’s clear a Millwall player played it back into Mus [Bundu], so it’s not offside. These small decisions are costing us.”
Writer’s View
Millwall’s ability to capitalize on mistakes and hold onto narrow leads is becoming a hallmark of their play. Romain Esse’s composure, especially at just 19, could make him a crucial player moving forward. As for Plymouth, their inability to convert possession into goals remains a significant issue, and unless Rooney finds a solution, their poor away form could see them dragged further into the relegation fight.
