‘I Don’t Care’ – Regis Le Bris Reacts To Another Sunderland Win

Sunderland claimed a vital 2-1 victory over Luton Town at Kenilworth Road, maintaining their position at the top of the Championship.

In a game filled with drama, goals from Chris Rigg and Romaine Mundle secured the win despite a strong response from Luton, who remain near the relegation zone.

First Half Controversy

Carlton Morris came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half. The striker was in an onside position when he scored from a Daiki Hashioka flick, but the goal was controversially ruled out for offside, with the officials judging that Clark, standing in the six-yard box, was interfering with play.

Second Half Sparks to Life

The game burst into action early in the second. Sunderland took the lead in the 55th minute when Chris Rigg pounced on a loose touch by Tahith Chong just outside the Luton penalty area. Rigg showed excellent composure to slip through the defense and fire past Thomas Kaminski, keeping Sunderland’s record of scoring in every Championship game this season intact.

Luton quickly responded. In the 63rd minute, Carlton Morris, who had earlier seen a goal ruled out for offside, delivered a crucial assist. The captain flicked on Alfie Doughty’s free-kick to Elijah Adebayo, who headed in from close range, marking his first goal of the 2024-25 season.

Mundle’s Magic Moment

Sunderland regained the lead just minutes later with a moment of brilliance from Romaine Mundle. The winger cut in from the left, curling a superb strike into the far corner from the edge of the box, leaving Kaminski with no chance.

Frustration boiled over at the final whistle as players from both sides were involved in a heated confrontation. However, the win took Sunderland top, not that it bothers their manager.

“I don’t care about the table at the moment, the season is so long. I’m just focused on the improvement of the team,” Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris told BBC Radio Newcastle.

The result leaves Sunderland three points clear of Leeds United at the top of the table, while Luton sit precariously just two points above the relegation zone.

Writer’s View

Sunderland’s ability to find goals when needed has been a hallmark of their season so far. Their clinical finishing, combined with Mundle’s standout performance, sets them apart as real contenders. Luton showed they can compete with the Championship’s best, but the lack of finishing touch may come back to haunt them if they don’t sharpen up in front of goal.
