After weeks of speculation, Leeds United has successfully secured the services of Josuha Guilavogui, bringing the experienced French midfielder to Elland Road on a short-term deal.
Guilavogui, 34, arrives as a free agent to bolster Leeds’ midfield and defence, a much-needed reinforcement as the club navigates a demanding season under manager Daniel Farke.
Guilavogui’s Family Amazed by Leeds United Move
In his first interview as a Leeds United player, Guilavogui shared how his family and friends were overjoyed when they learned of his move to the famous English club. The former Mainz player has spent the majority of his career in Europe, featuring for major clubs like Atletico Madrid and VfL Wolfsburg, but this marks his first stint in English football. The midfielder admitted that Leeds’ reputation, particularly in France, made the decision to join an easy one.
“When I spoke with my family and friends, when I said Leeds, they said, ‘wow! Leeds United?’ You know Leeds is very famous in France, Olivier Dacourt played there, as well Marcelo Bielsa was there. Very good trainer, he trained one of the biggest clubs in France,” Guilavogui revealed.
Despite receiving offers from other clubs following his release from Mainz in the summer, Guilavogui felt Leeds was the perfect destination. His arrival ends a three-week search by Leeds for a free agent to strengthen their squad.

Where Will Guilavogui Fit in at Leeds?
Guilavogui’s versatility makes him a valuable asset for Leeds United, able to play both in central midfield and as a centre-back. With injuries affecting the squad, such as Max Wober being sidelined and Joe Rodon nearing suspension, Guilavogui could find himself thrust into action sooner rather than later. He has not played a full 90 minutes in seven months, but Farke and his staff are confident in his ability to contribute immediately.
The Frenchman’s experience will be equally important off the pitch. As Leeds’ oldest player, he is expected to mentor younger teammates, helping them fulfil their potential.
Writer’s View
Guilavogui’s move to Leeds United seems a well-calculated decision for both player and club. His experience and versatility are key, but equally important is his leadership off the field. At 34, he brings maturity and know-how to a team that could benefit from more veteran presence. He could play a pivotal role in the remainder of the season, especially in those hard-fought matches where Leeds need composure in midfield.
