Bolton Wanderers’ defender Eoin Toal faces a race against time to be cleared for this Saturday’s League One showdown against Peterborough United, after suffering a head injury while on international duty with Northern Ireland.
The centre-back missed Bolton’s last two matches, against Burton Albion and Birmingham City, after sustaining a knock in Northern Ireland’s October 12 fixture against Belarus. Despite this, Toal was selected to start just three days later against Bulgaria but was forced off the pitch due to dizziness, raising concerns about his fitness.
Manager Ian Evatt expressed frustration over the uncertainty surrounding Toal’s condition after his return to Bolton. The club had been left in the dark by the Northern Ireland FA regarding whether the defender had officially been diagnosed with concussion upon his return to training.
Eoin Toal’s Status Remains Unclear
According to FA guidelines, players who have suffered a concussion must follow the Graduated Return to Play Programme, which may require up to three weeks before resuming competitive action. This timeline leaves Toal’s availability for Saturday’s crucial match against Peterborough up in the air.
The defender was expected to feature in Bolton’s midweek fixture, but a neurologist advised against it. Manager Ian Evatt shared his thoughts on the situation:
“Toal went as part of the protocol for concussion. He went to see the neurologist on Monday and he wasn’t comfortable because of the two episodes with Northern Ireland. I am not happy with the way that was dealt with, but we are where we are with international football. We are hopeful he can pass to play on Saturday.”
Bolton has been hit by multiple injuries recently, with Nathan Baxter and Kyle Dempsey both nursing knocks. While Baxter, the team’s goalkeeper, was described as “close but not close enough” to return, Evatt is still evaluating his options ahead of the Peterborough game.
Several key players remain sidelined, including Gethin Jones, Carlos Mendes Gomes, and Jordi Osei-Tutu. Additionally, the Whites will be without George Thomason and Chris Forino for several weeks due to injuries, further stretching the squad’s depth.
