MK Dons defender Joe Tomlinson has echoed head coach Scott Lindsey’s bold assertion that the Dons are not only the biggest club in League Two but could also rival many in League One.
His comments come after the team’s gritty 2-1 win over Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night, a result that saw them climb to 12th in the standings. The victory marked MK Dons’ first back-to-back wins since March, and it prompted Lindsey to make bold claims about the size of the League Two club.
Building Momentum Amid Scrappy Wins
Tomlinson admitted that the quality of football on display, particularly in the second half, was far from ideal. Tuesday’s game was a scrappy affair, with Accrington Stanley employing tactics aimed at disrupting MK Dons’ flow. Referee Ross Martin, making his EFL debut, handed out ten yellow cards in a match that was tough for the spectators.

However, the result prompted former Peterborough man Tomlinson to double down on his bosses comments about the size of the club.
“He’s right – we’re the biggest club in the league, and the biggest probably in the league above as well,” Tomlinson claimed as they climbed into 12th in League Two. “There is so much potential here, and with the players we’ve got in the changing room we should be up there, not where we are. We’re making the steps, we’ve gone back-to-back now, and show everyone where we should be.”
However, the 24-year-old also noted that improvements are still needed. “We know there is a lot of improvements to make. We weren’t at our best in the first half, especially, we wanted more control,” Tomlinson admitted, while also pointing out that the team’s quality should eventually shine through despite opponents’ efforts to make matches difficult.
Writer’s View
Tomlinson’s confidence, combined with Lindsey’s assertion of MK Dons’ stature, reflects a team eager to rise up the ranks. While the recent performances have been scrappy, the back-to-back wins suggest that the squad is finding its footing. If they can build on this momentum, MK Dons may yet fulfil their potential and challenge for promotion in the second half of the season.
