Cardiff City extended their impressive run of form under interim manager Omer Riza with a commanding 2-0 victory over Portsmouth at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Buoyed by their emphatic 5-0 victory against Plymouth Argyle, Cardiff made another lightning-fast start. Regan Poole’s unfortunate own goal, followed by Callum Robinson’s clinical strike, saw the home side take a comfortable 2-0 lead within the first 13 minutes. Portsmouth struggled to recover and were pinned back for much of the match.
Bluebirds in Full Flow
Cardiff’s early dominance was evident as they quickly established their lead. The pressure paid off when Perry Ng’s dangerous low cross forced Poole to inadvertently steer the ball into his own net. Moments later, Cardiff capitalized again as Alex Robertson’s corner was flicked on by Dimitrios Goutas, allowing Robinson to slam the ball home off the underside of the bar.
The hosts were relentless, carving out numerous chances, with Anwar El Ghazi, Ollie Tanner, and David Turnbull all testing Portsmouth’s substitute goalkeeper, Jordan Archer, who was called into action after an early injury to the starting keeper. Despite the wave of attacks, Archer managed to prevent further damage, keeping his side in the contest.
However, Pompey’s opportunities were few and far between. Their first shot on target didn’t come until the 57th minute, with Kusini Yengi’s attempt being deflected by Callum Lang. Cardiff’s goalkeeper, Jak Alnwick, responded with an outstanding low save to deny any hope of a Portsmouth comeback.
Despite a late surge from Portsmouth, Cardiff maintained control, pushing for a third goal as El Ghazi and Rubin Colwill both came close in the closing stages. The final whistle was met with cheers from the home crowd, celebrating yet another vital win under Riza’s stewardship.
Cardiff’s resurgence under Riza has been remarkable, with three victories in their last five matches. The win lifts them to 19th in the Championship table, a significant improvement after languishing at the bottom just a few weeks ago. Meanwhile, Portsmouth remain rooted to the bottom.

Omer Riza’s impact on Cardiff has been transformative, both in terms of performance and results. The team is playing with newfound confidence, and their attacking threat has been revitalized. If Riza continues to produce such results, his chances of landing the managerial job on a permanent basis will only grow stronger.
