Former Wigan Athletic forward Max McMillan has signed with Northern Premier League Division One East side North Ferriby, following his release from the League One outfit earlier this year.
The announcement was made via North Ferriby’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, marking a new chapter for the 22-year-old attacker after several months of uncertainty.
Max McMillan Recent Moves
Wigan Athletic parted ways with McMillan at the end of last season, and the player became a free agent in June. Since then, he has been exploring his options, with a summer trial at National League side York City almost leading to a new deal. However, despite impressing during his time with the club, York City decided not to offer him a contract.

Back in July, York City manager Adam Hinshelwood spoke positively about McMillan’s performance during the trial. Despite the praise, McMillan left the Minstermen without a deal and continued his search for a new club. North Ferriby has now provided him the opportunity to rebuild his career with the chance of regular first-team football, something the forward needs after a year spent largely on the sidelines.
The club from the banks of the Humber have had a torrid recent history, having been wound up in 2019 after flirting with the National League a couple of seasons earlier. On more steady ground, they’re now hunting promotion, and sit sixth in the table at present
Max McMillan’s Career
McMillan’s journey through English football began at Leeds United, where he joined their academy at just eight years old. After progressing through their youth system, he moved to Fleetwood Town in 2021, making a couple of senior appearances and spending time on loan at Radcliffe for more playing experience. A year later, Wigan Athletic signed him to a one-year deal, but McMillan never broke into their first team and spent the season with the development squad.
McMillan could make his debut in their next fixture against Grimsby Borough.
Writer’s View
Max McMillan’s move to North Ferriby could be a turning point in his career, offering the regular football he needs after a challenging year. His impressive youth pedigree at Leeds and positive signs during his York City trial suggest he still has plenty to offer. If he can rediscover his form and confidence, this step down to Northern Premier League Division One East could help him reignite his career and attract attention from higher leagues once again.
