As Huddersfield Town prepare to face Wrexham in a crucial League One fixture, manager Michael Duff has sparked conversation by claiming the Terriers are a “bigger club” than their Welsh rivals.
Huddersfield, currently sitting sixth in the table, are eager to continue their recent momentum after a 3-1 victory over Bristol Rovers. However, they face a stiff challenge from Wrexham, who have defied expectations since their promotion and are known for their passionate home crowd.
Michael Duff’s Confidence in Huddersfield’s Status
Ahead of the match, Duff spoke candidly about the upcoming fixture, acknowledging Wrexham’s rise but asserting his club’s superiority. The Terriers were relegated from the Championship last season but have ambitions to bounce straight back. Wrexham, by contrast, have enjoyed a meteoric rise from the National League to League One in recent years.
“In terms of stature of club, we’re a bigger club than them, I don’t think that’s being disrespectful, but the one thing they’ve got is momentum and confidence. They’re hard things [to build], we’ve found that ourselves in this run that we’ve been in,” Duff told Yorkshire Live. He added, “It’s a brilliant story, but they haven’t become world beaters. We need to go there with an arrogance of ‘we are a big team in this league,’ and go and deliver that.”
The former Cheltenham and Barnsley boss also highlighted the importance of silencing Wrexham’s passionate supporters. “It’s going to be a real challenge,” Duff said, noting that beating not only the players but the crowd will be crucial to securing a result.
Huddersfield’s Journey and Ambitions
Huddersfield’s recent history has been turbulent. The Terriers were playing Premier League football as recently as 2019, but last season saw them relegated to League One alongside Birmingham City and Rotherham United. Over the summer, Duff was appointed manager with the task of guiding the club back to the Championship.
This summer, Huddersfield reshuffled their squad, bringing in players like Antony Evans and Callum Marshall to strengthen their chances of promotion. At the same time, key departures such as Sorba Thomas and Jack Rudoni helped free up space in the squad.

Michael Duff’s comments are bold, but they reflect the pressure on Huddersfield to reclaim their former stature. While they may be a “bigger” club historically, Wrexham’s momentum is undeniable, and Duff’s men will need more than reputation to come away with a result.
