Colchester United Lose At Home As Struggles Continue

Cheltenham Town secured their first away win of the season at Colchester United on Saturday thanks to a brace from Jordan Thomas.

The result sees the Robins jump above their hosts in the League Two table, climbing to 17th spot.

Visitors Strike First

Michael Flynn’s men came into this contest on the back of two defeats and a run of only one league win in six.

Flynn would have been delighted when the former Bath City wideman netted his first goal for his current club after just five minutes.

It wasn’t the most difficult finish of Thomas’ career, as he tapped home from just a few yards out following an Ethon Archer cross.

International Striker Levels, Home Side Forced Into Change

Montserrat striker Lyle Taylor provided the equaliser for Danny Cowley’s side just before the half-hour mark.

The 34-year-old attacker, who scored his nation’s winner against Bonaire last week, latched on to a Samson Tovide ball into the box to score past Joe Day.

Less than ten minutes after the goal, the hosts were forced into a change as Tovide was forced off through injury, being replaced by Tom Hopper.

Manager Cowley felt the change hurt his side, “You can’t then on the back of that lose the likes of Samson and Owura because it hurt the team and it looked like we lost our way on the back of Samson going off the back of it.”

Thomas Strikes Again, Day Thwarts Hosts

Cowley will be disappointed with how his side conceded what proved to be the winner, as they were dispossessed in midfield and allowed Thomas to advance.

The 23-year-old took aim from the edge of the box and watched on as his deflected shot wrong foot Matt Macey in the U’s goal.

As the home side pushed for the equaliser, Day was twice called upon to save from Taylor as his side hung on for a vital three points.

This defeat leaves Colchester languishing in 20th place in the League Two table, having taken only two points from their previous four matches.
