High-flying Walsall produced a clinical display in Cleethorpes as they overcame Grimsby Town by four goals to one.
The Saddlers moved up to third after the impressive victory over their playoff-chasing hosts.
Second Half Goal Blitz
Following a relatively uneventful first half that saw George McEachran enter the referee’s book and a disallowed goal for the visitors, it was Jamille Matt who rose highest to give Walsall the lead.
Matt’s 56th-minute strike was followed 13 minutes later by a super strike from Jamie Jellis. Former Tamworth midfielder Jellis latched on to a loose clearance to fire home on the half-volley.
Nathan Lowe put the game to bed with a close-range finish after 74 minutes before substitute Donovan Wilson fired an 87th-minute consolation for the hosts.
There was still time for Walsall substitute Danny Johnson to put the icing on Walsall’s cake with a fourth in stoppage time, having only been on the field for a matter of minutes.
Despite the scoreline, it was the Mariners who dominated possession and created the most chances. The visitors, however, were clinical when the chances came, scoring four goals from four big chances.
Next Up
Town will be hoping to get their playoff chase back on track on Tuesday when they head to Tranmere Rovers.
Three points at Blundell Park have seen May Sadler’s side move into the automatic promotion places, two points behind leaders Port Vale with a game in hand.
Manager Sadler feels his side were worthy of the three points.
“We felt like there was a game to be won and I’m delighted we scored the way we did. Connor (Barrett) was a thorn in the side, Jamie (Jellis) scored a cracking goal and it was no less than we deserved.“
Walsall’s next match is at home to struggling Carlisle United on Tuesday night as they look to cement their place in the race for the top three.
