Stoke City Attacker Attracting League One Interest

Stoke City striker Niall Ennis is a target for League One sides Wrexham and Barnsley, according to Darren Witcoop on X.

Both clubs have enquired over the player’s availability as the transfer window nears a close, with the two sides looking to bolster their forward lines for the season. Ennis has, however, been present in Stoke’s season so far, making four appearances, so it is yet to be seen whether the Potters have a place for him in their squad or if they are willing to sell.

Ennis has struggled for football in the Championship, so a move down a division may be what is needed. He made 25 appearances across two clubs last season, scoring only twice. Prior to his time in the second tier, he did however find success in League One at Plymouth Argyle, scoring 14 times in the 2022-23 season as the Pilgrims gained promotion to the Championship, which sparked a move to Blackburn Rovers for the 2023-24 season. His time at Ewood Park was short-lived, and a move to Stoke came about in the January transfer window.

The Staffordshire outfit have struggled during Ennis’ time at the club, and they’ve made a disappointing start to the campaign, lying in the bottom half of the table after two losses in three. Ennis looks like he may leave having struggled to help the team in front of goal, and Wrexham and Barnsley are both keen. The two clubs have made their desire for a striker known, and both lie in the top half at this early stage, as they look to make the step up to the Championship. If a move happens and Ennis recreates his form from his final Plymouth season, whoever gets him may do just that.

Writer’s View

This is an interesting one. Ennis has struggled in the Championship so it may make sense for Stoke to sell, as well as for the player. He needs more playing time and to return to form; he’s shown he can do this in League One so a step down may be necessary. For the potential buying clubs they will be hoping for the same as they hunt promotion, and Ennis may be their man.
