Stoke City are looking to reinforce their striking options before the window shuts today, with Steven Schumacher already identifying a target.
The Potters have already lost a few forward options this summer, with Tyrese Campbell heading to league rivals Sheffield United and Wesley departing on a free transfer. They have loaned in Liverpool’s Lewis Koumas, who has already scored, and made a permanent move for Sam Gallagher from Blackburn Rovers.
However, according to The Daily Telegraph’s John Percy, Schumacher’s side are still in the market for one more striker before 11pm tonight. City are now targeting Leicester City‘s Tom Cannon on a loan move and pushing for the deal to be completed.
The Irish forward has previous Championship experience with The Foxes, playing 13 times and scoring three times in their title-clinching season in 2023/24. He moved permanently from Everton to arrive at the King Power last season, but is one of many players who could allowed to leave on loan before the window shuts.
Kasey McAteer is another, appearing in Leicester’s opening Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur. He has recently signed a new four-year deal to stay at the club, but should Steve Cooper’s side make more attacking signings, then a loan move may be sanctioned according to Leicestershire Live.
Cannon has also appeared in the second division with Preston North End, having a much more fruitful spell with eight goals in 23 appearances in the second half of the 2022/23 season. His performance at Deepdale made him the second-highest scorer in the league at the club, behind Ched Evans.
The 21-year-old has been in demand by a multitude of Championship sides, with Sunderland, Norwich City and Hull City also mooted for deals. However, The Black Cats have now reportedly pulled out of a deal, initially offering a £5 million sum for a permanent move to Wearside.
Speaking to the media about Cannon’s short-term future, Cooper said (Quotes via Sunderland Live): “He’s definitely a good young player and is attracting a lot of attention. It is possible [that Cannon leaves]. If he does, it will be the decision the club thinks is best. If not, I’ll enjoy working with him.”

Tom Cannon will likely be allowed to leave on loan should a move be sanctioned away. It is probably the best for both parties as the 21-year-old has failed to register any meaningful minutes this season. Embedding himself as a solid Championship striker will do him the world of good and could get him a place in The Foxes’ starting lineup depending on what league they will be in next season.
His form at Preston North End should show clubs he is a good asset to have, and Stoke would do well to have someone like him in their squad. Lewis Koumas is primarily a winger and yet has been used up front. Niall Ennis has previously been courted by both Wrexham and Barnsley, with only The Tykes now pursuing the former Plymouth Argyle man. Bringing the Irish forward in would be a welcome upgrade for The Potters.
