Coventry City Attacker Set For League One Move

Coventry City attacker Fabio Tavares is the subject of late interest from League One outfit Reading, according to Football Insider.

The 23-year-old joined the Sky Blues from Rochdale in 2021. He made his debut a year later and has since gone on to score four goals in 29 appearances for the club. However, his only outing this season came in the Carabao Cup first round win over Bristol City and he has failed to make the matchday squad in each of the last three games in all competitions.

This has led to interest from League One, with Reading keen to bolster their attacking options before tonight’s transfer deadline. It’s been a slow window for the Royals, who are yet to make any additions to their squad. They have also had to contend with the loss of key man Femi Azeez, who joined Championship side Millwall last week.

Ruben Selles’ team are looking to build on a difficult campaign last season, where off-the-field antics took centre stage. Despite an array of point deductions, they performed admirably to finish 17th.

It’s been a mixed bag so far this season. They started with an excellent 1-1 draw against title favourites Birmingham City before a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic. However, they suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat at Wrexham last weekend and will be hoping to bounce back when they host Charlton Athletic tomorrow.

It appears as if Selles is hoping that at least one new face will be through the door by the time kick off rolls around. Tavares joined Coventry after breaking into Rochdale’s team as a teenager, with the Greater Manchester-based side then in League One. Although he has struggled to make an impact at the CBS Arena, he did pen a contract extension in 2022, which is set to expire next summer.

It is claimed that Reading are hoping to bring Tavares in on a season-long loan and are trying to complete the deal before tonight’s transfer deadline.

Writer’s View

Reading really need somebody through the door today. Tavares is comfortable playing in any position across the front three but has been utilised on the right wing by Coventry, the same position which Azeez played at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

This would be a good move for the player. He is at the stage of his career where he really needs to be playing regularly and that doesn’t look likely at Coventry. Reading would give him the platform to showcase what he can do and potentially earn a new contract at the Championship club, or a permanent move next summer. It’s almost risk-free for the Royals as well. Signing a player with a point to prove could be a masterstroke.
