Wigan Athletic Star Linked With Championship Move

According to Wigan Today, Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers are plotting a move for Wigan Athletic player Thelo Aasgaard.

The 22-year-old has come through the ranks at Wigan and has since played 136 times for the Latics in all competitions. During this time, he has contributed 28 goals and assists. He helped Wigan to their first win of the 2024/25 campaign yesterday, as Shaun Maloney’s side won against newly promoted Crawley Town. Albeit it took a large deflection, Aasgaard was the player who took the shot that has now gone down as an own goal. On top of this, he impressed in pre-season, scoring the majority of Wigan’s goals, one of which came against Blackburn.

The Latics have had a busy window so far, and won’t want to lose the Norwegian international with less than a week until the transfer window shuts. With the club already losing Charlie Hughes, losing Aasgaard would be another major blow for Maloney as he looks to improve on their 12th-placed finish last season. 10 new players have walked through the door at the newly named ‘Brick Community Stadium’ so far, but there is no doubt that Maloney would want a few more if the 22-year-old does depart for the Championship.

Blackburn have lost key player Sammie Szmodics, who joined Premier League outfit Ipswich Town for an undisclosed fee. John Eustace will be looking for a replacement, and it seems they are targeting Wigan scarlet Aasgaard. Eustace’s first full season in charge at Ewood Park is going better than many would’ve expected, with Rovers registering wins against Oxford United and Derby County, whilst rescuing a late point against Norwich City. Their undefeated form sees them occupy third place in the Championship table at the time of writing.

Blackburn are looking to make the former Norway Under-21 international their eighth signing of the summer but with the 22-year-old signing a long-term contract extension last summer, which is valid until 2028, it may prove to be a difficult move with the lack of time left of this summer transfer window. The window officially shuts at 11 PM on the 30th of August, with many clubs scrambling to get their business done before it shuts.

The lack of time, mixed with Maloney’s high praise of the player, will prove to be crucial for both sides. Speaking to Wigan Today after the Latics win against Crawley, Maloney was full of praise for Aasgaard

“I set him a bit of a challenge last year. He didn’t really want the Number 10 shirt, but I kind of forced it upon him because he was our main player, our main creative player. I thought today he was brilliant, in a different way, without the ball, the effort he put in was outstanding. I love Thelo, I think he’s a brilliant player, a brilliant guy, and today I saw the real Thelo. Now I need to see that every week”

Aasgaard is a crucial player for Wigan, and as previously mentioned, the Latics won’t want to lose a player as crucial as him with such little time left in the window. The 22-year-old has come through at Wigan, knows the club like the back of his hand, and will be extremely hard to replace. However, if the price is right, Wigan might have no chance but to accept the bid.

From a Blackburn perspective, they obviously feel Aasgaard is ready for the step up to the Championship. With Rovers’ current form, it would be an ideal time for a new, young player like Aasgaard to step into the building. With time to settle, Blackburn will be hoping that the 22-year-old will have the same success as the last player who joined them from the third tier.
