Newport County Secure Premier League Loan

Newport County have bolstered their squad as the window draws to a close after agreeing a loan move for Jamie Miley.

The Newcastle United midfielder has, according to Pete O’Rourke, given the green light to move to South Wales this season, joining an Exiles side embarking on their first campaign Nelson Jardim. The Portuguese boss has made a good start at Rodney Parade, winning two of his opening three League Two games.

Wins over Doncaster Rovers and Accrington Stanley have seen County bounce back from an opening-day loss to Cheltenham Town and have elevated the side to fifth place in the table. Their eight goals puts them top of the scoring charts in the fourth tier, ahead of playing bottom-side Morecambe this weekend.

Miley, brother of The Magpies breakthrough star Lewis, is set to embark on his first move away from Tyneside, having featured in Eddie Howe’s pre-season plans against Hull City and Spanish side Girona. However, he is yet to make any senior appearances in his career, instead playing occasionally in Newcastle’s Premier League 2 side.

Newport have mainly used free transfers in this window, signing 15 new players across the summer. The big names through the door at Rodney Parade are Crewe Alexandra‘s Courtney Baker-Richardson and Stoke City‘s Matthew Baker, both returning to the club following previous spells.

Speaking about further transfers to club media following the win against Accrington, Jardim said: “Yeah, we have on our radar, two or three. Keiron Evans signed yesterday, so another one who will probably compete and bring another quality and more options to the team.

“We’re looking to sign another one or two players, so let’s see how it goes. But we’re not rushing, we want to make sure that anyone coming in is the right player, the right character and known he’s coming to a team that is looking to improve every day.”

Writer’s View

Jamie Miley is truly an unknown quantity in senior football. Whilst he might have shown promise in Newcastle United’s pre-season, it is very different to how the game is played competitively. It would be expected that he comes in and is eased into games by Nelson Jardim, but if his brother is anything to go by, he could be a useful asset to Newport County.

The Exiles have made a really good start to their season following that 3-1 win over Doncaster Rovers. Grant McCann’s side were red-hot in the second half of last season and are expected to be competing at the top end of the league. Their fixtures so far and in the next few weeks are fairly tame compared to other clubs so it will be some time before you can gauge how far Jardin has taken his team following taking over from Graham Coughlan.
