Cardiff City’s Carabao Cup dreams were dashed heart-wrenching as they conceded twice in stoppage time, falling 5-3 to Premier League side Southampton in a pulsating second-round encounter.
Cardiff fought valiantly in a match that had everything—goals, drama, and late heartbreak but ultimately succumbed to the Saints’ late surge. The Bluebirds, determined to make their mark, equalized three times throughout the game but could not prevent Southampton’s injury-time blitz.
The action began with Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes opening the scoring just 10 minutes in, but Cardiff responded through Rubin Colwill, who hammered in a stunning 30-yard strike, much to the delight of the home crowd. Colwill, recently overlooked for the Wales squad, made a statement in front of national team boss Craig Bellamy.
Despite Cardiff’s resilience, they trailed again when Southampton’s Sam Amo-Ameyaw curled in his first senior goal. But Cardiff refused to back down, drawing level early in the second half when Southampton’s Ronnie Edwards inadvertently turned the ball into his net after Raheem Conte’s cross caused chaos in the box.
The back-and-forth battle continued as Southampton’s Cameron Archer restored the visitors’ lead with a well-taken effort. Cardiff showed their fighting spirit again when substitute Alex Robertson volleyed home just two minutes later, setting the stage for a tense finale.
With the score locked at 3-3 and the match seemingly headed for a penalty shootout, Cardiff’s hopes were cruelly dashed. James Bree struck a powerful shot in the first minute of injury time, looping over goalkeeper Jak Alnwick. Moments later, Archer added his second goal, sealing Southampton’s passage to the next round and leaving Cardiff to rue what could have been.
Cardiff’s performance, however, showed promise. They matched their Premier League opponents for large portions of the game. The Bluebirds will take heart from their attacking display, especially Colwill’s standout moment, but they will need to regroup quickly as they turn their focus back to the Championship.
The defeat, while painful, highlighted Cardiff’s potential under pressure and set a benchmark for the challenges ahead. Southampton, meanwhile, left the Welsh capital relieved to have survived a thrilling cup tie that nearly slipped away.
“We can take a lot of positives from the game when we see the youngsters playing against a Premier League club,” said Cardiff chief Erol Bulut.
“We had it in our hands at one stage and had Cian Ashford hit the target with his big chance it might have been different.
“But they showed their quality and experience in the end. It was disappointing to concede just a few minutes into added time. It would have been nice and exciting to have taken it to penalties.”
Bulut will now be hoping his side can carry the momentum from this game into their league form. The Bluebirds are currently bottom of the Championship table with a single point and single goal to show for their endeavours.

A result like this can help drive a club forward, but there do appear to be issues at the Cardiff City Stadium. They attacked well and always looked a danger against their top-flight opponents, but they struggled to keep them at bay in a great match for spectators.
It wasn’t so great for the Cardiff defence, and while this was a Premier League side, they’ve looked leaky in all of their games so far. If they can use the performance as a springboard, great, but there’s a real fear the late goals will only serve to demotivate and damage confidence, not the other way around.
