Portsmouth CEO Issues Important Transfer Update

Portsmouth CEO Andy Cullen has issued an important transfer update regarding Pompey’s business ahead of their Championship clash with Luton Town this Saturday.

John Mousinho’s men are back in the Championship after 13 years away from the second tier, and kicked off their campaign with an enthralling 3-3 draw against promotion favourites Leeds United. The newly promoted team took the lead twice, including a stoppage-time penalty, but couldn’t secure the win as Brenden Aaronson salvaged a point for the home side. Pompey’s games don’t get any easier, with Luton, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion, Burnley and Sheffield United making up their next six Championship games.

They have so far made nine signings, with the likes of Andre Dozzell, Josh Murphy, Elias Sorensen and returning fan-favourite Matt Richie all linking up at PO4, as Portsmouth look to avoid dropping back down to the third tier. The official transfer window closes at 11 PM on September 1st, with Portsmouth believing they can get extra bodies in the building before the deadline.

Efforts are ongoing behind the scenes to build on the successful progress already made in the transfer market. Although this may not be immediately apparent to fans, Cullen assured that there’s still plenty of excitement ahead as the Blues edge closer to securing their remaining targets.

Speaking on Pompey Talk, Cullen stated

“Our recruitment to date this summer has seen us welcome nine new players to Pompey and we look forward to seeing Andre Dozzell, Elias Sørensen, Jacob Farrell, Jordan Archer, Jordan Williams, Josh Murphy, Matt Ritchie, Rueben Swann and Sammy Silvera all play their part in Pompey blue.

“Our activity is far from complete, as we look to complete further signings in a variety of positions over the remaining two weeks of the window.

“It has been very different to what we previously experienced in League One and activity has proved to be slower for most Championship clubs. Things should now accelerate as Premier League sides and other bigger teams in Europe see their players return from the Euros and the Olympics and we remain confident that our patience on key targets will come to fruition.”

Writer’s View

Although the Blues’ squad looks thinner than they would like, they showed the Championship what they could do last Saturday, getting a point against a strong Leeds side away from home. However, Portsmouth did lose midweek at the hands of Millwall in the Carabao Cup, proving that they may need more strength in numbers if they want to be able to consistently perform in a league as gruelling as the Championship.

The busy summer Portsmouth have had will help in equipping themselves for the league, bringing in a mix of youth and experience so far. A few more in through the door could provide injury cover, as well as suitable replacements for fatigue and cup competitions.
