Portsmouth Boss – ‘Nothing Concrete At The Minute’

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho insists the club have received no concrete interest in winger Anthony Scully, as reported by The 72.

Following promotion to the Championship, the 25-year-old has been made available for transfer having struggled to make an impact since joining the club.

Having joined the Fratton Park side in July 2023, Scully only managed six appearances as Pompey comfortably won League One and regained their place in the second tier.

The Republic of Ireland Under 21 international endured an equally frustrating season with Wigan Athletic in the Championship before heading to Portsmouth.

Scully appeared in just five league matches for the Latics following his move from Lincoln City. He had impressed with the Imps, helping Michael Appleton’s side to the playoff final and scoring 22 league goals across two full seasons.

His opportunities at Portsmouth looked to have decreased further following the arrival of Matt Ritchie and Sam Silvera. With his contract due to expire at the end of this campaign, offloading him now would allow Portsmouth to make some money on the winger rather than lose him for free next summer.

A move and a fresh start would also be in the player’s best interests, having seen his career stall for two seasons.

He wasn’t involved in Portsmouth’s first-round Carabao Cup defeat to Millwall last night. Prior to last night’s action, Pompey boss John Mousinho spoke about the transfer-listed winger. Speaking to The News, the manager explained how it was business as usual and that the situation hadn’t changed.

Mousinho said, “It’s the same, nothing’s changed there, it’s the same as it was this time last week. There’s nothing concrete at the minute, so Anthony’s just training with us as normal and, yeah, no change there.”

Scully performed admirably for Lincoln City and earned his move to the Championship but his career has hit a roadblock since leaving Lincolnshire.

He would be a good acquisition for a League One side that wants to play with an inverted winger as he provides a real goal threat cutting in from the left.
