Derby County are edging closer to their second signing of the summer following the news that striker Jerry Yates has undergone a medical at Pride Park this afternoon.
News of the Rams’ interest in the Swansea City man emerged last week when the BBC reported that Yates was close to a loan switch to the East Midlands. The 27-year-old joined the Welsh outfit from Blackpool last summer in a deal believed to be worth around £2.5 million.
He began the campaign as Michael Duff’s preferred option up front, scoring twice in his first three Championship games. However, he fell out of favour following the departure of the Northern Irishman in December.
The former Rotherham United man played a bit-part role following the appointment of Luke Williams a month later, with the majority of his appearances coming from the substitutes bench. He finished the campaign with nine goals in 46 outings in all competitions.
Swansea are thought to be in the market for a striker this summer. There are the obvious links to Notts County’s Macaulay Langstaff, who enjoyed much success with Williams at Meadow Lane.
This has seemingly opened up the exit door for Yates. He penned a three-year deal upon his arrival at the Swansea.com Stadium which runs until 2026. As such, a season-long loan looks to be the preferred option.
According to Football Insider, a medical took place this afternoon ahead of the proposed move. The Rams are looking for Championship quality as they prepare for their first season back in the second tier.
Manager Paul Warne was linked with several attacking options throughout the course of the last 12 months after losing talisman David McGoldrick to Notts County last summer. Despite their lack of a direct replacement, Derby still finished second in League One to secure promotion.
The two-time English champions completed the signing of Ben Osborn on a free transfer last week following his release from Sheffield United. Corey Blackett-Taylor has also joined on a permanent basis following his successful loan stint from Charlton Athletic.

A striker had to be one of the priorities for Derby this summer, so it’s no surprise to see them act early in the transfer window. James Collins did an admirable job last season, but Yates will provide extra quality. He is a player with vast experience at this level, something that would have appealed to Warne.
A loan move suits all parties. The Rams may have been unwilling to take a seven-figure risk on the player, especially as the main aim will be to secure Championship safety. Swansea could be the main beneficiaries here. If Yates goes on to have an excellent goal scoring campaign, he may be welcomed back next season. If not, they could look to cash in.
